JC de Castelbajac and Robert Combas: Painted to wear

In the world of fashion and art, it is not uncommon for two creative worlds to come together to give birth to something extraordinary. This fusion is often the catalyst for a new era of expression and innovation. It is in this spirit that the dress painted by Robert Combas for Jean-Charles de Castelbajac emerges as a symbol of bold collaboration and limitless creativity. It will be presented in 1982 during the Spring/Summer fashion show.

The meeting of geniuses

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, famous for his eccentric flair and avant-garde style in the world of fashion, has always been a fervent defender of art in all its forms. Between 1981 and 1984, he established a real dialogue with the artists of this period from the Figuration Libre and Fluxus movements, but above all his friends. Among them Jean-Charles Blais, Gérard Garouste, Ben and Robert Combas. The latter, a pioneer of Free Figuration and known for his explosive style and vibrant palette, brings unbridled energy to everything he touches. The piece presented here is the marriage of these two creative and rock spirits, promising an explosion of colors and surprising shapes.

A Living Work of Art

The dress itself is a white linen, the same type used by Van Gogh for his early paintings. Castelbajac started from an extremely simple form which is the shirt of Saint Louis exhibited at the Louvre, a sort of abnegation of the garment on which the artists put all their fantasy, even their madness. Combas deploys his talent on this canvas with total freedom. Each brushstroke seems to be an explosion of life, capturing the very essence of Combas' signature style.

The dress is double sided. On the front “The Battle”, on the back “The Chili Pepper of the Oriental Woman”. The Battles will subsequently be a recurring and representative theme of Combas' work.

The Impact of the Merger

This collaboration between Castelbajac and Combas is not limited to the creation of a unique fashion piece. It's a meeting between two worlds that interpenetrate, merging art and fashion to create something truly magical, in a total rock spirit.

The dress thus becomes much more than a simple item of clothing; it is a living work of art, a bold statement of creativity and freedom.

This artistic fusion reminds viewers that art can be found everywhere, even in the most unexpected places, and that collaboration between creative minds can result in truly extraordinary works.
