BEER JAR called Ukhamba
Culture Zulu, South Africa
First half of the 20th century
H .: 28; Diam .: 30 cm
(irregularity at the collar visible on photo)

Black glazed clay globular beer jar. This coloring is obtained during the second firing. Smoking has an oxidizing effect on the earth which gives it that dark appearance.
Four geometric patterns are applied in relief on the body: two crosses and two triangles arranged alternately.

Ukhamba pots were made by women and allowed to keep local beer drunk during rituals.
