PHARMACY POT or ALBARELLO
Region of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain
End of the 17th century
Earthenware
H.: 19.8; Diam.: 10 cm
This majolica albarello is cylindrical in shape, curved at the waist (to make it easier to grip) and with a shoulder at the level of the beaded neck (to attach a ligature and close the container). The belly is punctuated by a blue architectural scene and floral bouquets on a white background.
Albarelli were prized by apothecaries and pharmacies, who stored ointments, medicinal plants and other powders in them thanks to the non-porous properties of these containers.
