TABATIÈRE animated with a WEDDING SCENE

France, 19th century

Corozo nuts and metal

H.: 3.3; L.: 7 cm

Corozo nut snuffbox sculpted in the shape of a ship and animated on the lid in bas-relief of four characters celebrating a union: two figures seated on palm fronds, caressing a dove – sacred bird, referring to Aphrodite, goddess of love; below a garland of flowers held by two other standing figures. A seated dog occupies the far left of the scene.

A frieze of flowers is carved on the body of the tobacco box while the reverse is decorated with a large flower bud.

The lid is made mobile using a metal hinge.
