Kawabuko, Rei

Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese fashion designer born in Tokyo on October 11, 1942. After she graduated from the prestigious Keio University she created her brand Comme des Garçons. Her first fashion show in 1975 is a complete success. Rei Kawakubo renewed occidental standards of beauty and clothing. Far from the trends, and with her new style, she represented Antifashion in the 1980s. She used solely black fabric in asymmetric shapes, and invented the idea of voluntary damage with holes and tears. The brand collections were created by her and stylists like Junya Watanabe, Fumito Ganryu, and Tao Kurihara. She opened stores in Paris in 1982, SoHO in 1983 and San Francisco in 1984.  Her 1981, 1997 and 2012 collections have marked the history of fashion. The brand launched its perfume division in the early 1990s with perfumes like Odeur 53.
