Scarpa, Afra et Tobia
Afra and Tobia Scarpa is a famous couple of Italian designers. Tobia was born in Venice in 1935 and is the son of Carlo Scarpa the no less famous architect. Afra Bianchin was born in 1937 in Montebelluna. Their professional career began in Murano in 1958, where they worked for Venini in the field of glass. In 1960, Afra and Tobia opened their design office. They collaborate with many publishing houses such as B&B Italia, Knoll, Cassina or even Flos. Their creations, always comfortable and with a modernist aesthetic, are made from very diverse materials. The couple do not hesitate to use new technologies.
From 1960, they collaborated with the Benetton brand, for the development of shops.
In 1970, they won the Compasso d'Oro thanks to their Soriana armchair, produced by Cassina. Among the great successes of the designer couple, we can count the Coronado and Erasmo sofa, the Papillona floor lamp. Their creations are present in the largest international museums.
