Lithographs
Lithography is a multiple-proof printing technique like screen printing. Its objective is to bring art to as many people as possible. The technique was invented in Germany in the late 18th century. Unlike wood or copper engravings, its limestone engraving technique gives a more precise line and a better performance when making the multiple prints. Numerous lithographies appeared in the 19th century. Whether they represented wildlife, fantastic scenes or portraits, lithographies were very successful among the upper and lower middle-class. In the 20th century lithography technique was also used for posters like Roger Bezombes’ in 1981. Lithography has been promoted by artists like Steilein and his “Chat noir” (black cat) or Arman and his”Composition”.
