In 1908, Ernest Charles created the Maison Charles with the takeover of the bronzier Maison Ullmann and specialized in the reproduction of old light fixtures. Little by little, the company forged a reputation and became a benchmark in the bronze world. Maison Charles became a family affair in 1920, when Emile Albert Charles, eldest son of Ernest Charles took over the business. 12 years later, he joined forces with his brother Pierre.
The year 1959 marked a turning point in the history of the house. Jacques and Jean Charles, Emile's two sons, joined the company and created the "Charles style". Jacques, a graduate of Applied Arts in interior architecture and Jean, major of the Boulle school, interior architecture and wood carving section, have a new approach to lighting and creation and combine classicism, rigor and topicality. The famous pineapple, aloe, pine cone lamps… will see the light of day at this time. Icons of Maison Charles, these pieces are still relevant today.
In 1965 a new style was born with the creation of the stainless steel collection and its organ lamps, aesthetic reference of this period.
In 1971, it was Chrystiane Charles, wife of Jean, who took over the artistic direction of the House. A collection in his name was then created, offering magnificent lamp-sculptures inspired by nature.
10 years later, his son Laurent joined the company. Thanks to his training as an architect, he will bring geometric and graphic creations, of more contemporary inspiration.
