To mark the 80th anniversary of the Marché Paul Bert and in keeping with the theme "Around the World in 80 Years," Remix Gallery offers a different kind of journey: that of a decade that profoundly transformed design. The exhibition is based on a simple yet original principle: presenting one emblematic work for each year, from 1979 to 1990. Each piece is chosen for its creation date in order to tell the story, year by year, of the emergence of a new generation of designers.
Rather than a retrospective, this selection shows how ideas gradually evolved: the first research of the late 1970s, the effervescence of the early 1980s and its radicalism, then the influence of postmodernism alongside the appearance of a new sobriety at the end of the decade.
Long considered excessive, 1980s design is now recognized as a foundational moment in the history of contemporary furniture. Bold colors, new materials, humor, historical references, and formal freedom profoundly renewed the codes inherited from modernism.
The exhibition brings together French, Italian, Spanish, British, and Czech artists. Works by Philippe Starck, Christian Duc, Martine Bedin, Javier Mariscal, Nathalie du Pasquier, Alessandro Mendini, Andrée Putman, Jasper Morrison, and Borek Šípek reflect the diversity of this decade and the dialogue between different European scenes.
This proposal is part of the work of Remix Gallery, which for more than ten years has been advocating a historical reading of 1980s design and contributing to the rediscovery of many creators from this period.
