Description

SCEPTER of AUTHORITY called Kibango

Luba culture, Democratic Republic of the Congo

First half of the 20th century

Wood

H.: 147.5; L.: 14 cm

Wooden scepter of authority carved symmetrically on both sides. It consists of a flat section, cut into a stylized triangle and a foliate shape, incised with dibulu motifs – which refer to royalty. Only the part of the socket is smooth and cylindrical.

The upper part is animated by a face with a broad curved forehead, topped with a diadem, while the lower part depicts a character standing, arms in imploration.

Kibangos are signs of power and prestige.
