STATUE representing Thirusti Bommai
India, Rajasthan
20th century
Papier-mâché
H.: 55, Length. : 37; L.: 23 cm
Papier-mâché sculpture depicting a moustached devil – presumably Thirusti Bommai, the demon protector of houses; with a wide smile showing tongue-shaped openwork teeth.
Her bulging eyes caught outside glances and helped to repel malicious attention.
The braided headdress at the back of the head represents the devil's tail in the hair.
