Description

ZAMBLE GOURO MASK
Africa, Ivory Coast, 20th century
Wood, pigments
H.: 40cm – L.: 13cm

Hardwood with a brown patina; black pigments highlighted with ochre and white around the eyes and scarifications.
The almond-shaped, half-closed eyes are widely circled; the headdress is symbolized by an architectural relief engraving; the horns for the image of the antelope are fragmented with broad pigmented streaks.
The nose is thin and half-moon shaped; the open mouth revealing the sculpted teeth, symbolizes the leopard.
Characteristic of the north of the Gouro country, this type of mask represents a harnessed guib, and appeared with two other masks during the Yu festivities: zauli and gu.

Very good condition – On base.
