Pan-shaped then round barrel, monogrammed "FB" on the top and numbered "X 43747" on the left side.
Retractable handlebars.
Steel breechblock, marked "MANUFACTURE IMPERIALE St Etienne" and "Mle 1866" on the left side.
Sliding dog.
Long-bodied walnut frame.
Steel rod.
Two grenadières.
Stock numbered “F 48313” and marked with the factory’s acceptance stamp.
Control punches.

The Chassepot Mle 1866 cavalry rifles, series X, were produced in Saint-Étienne from rejected but still usable parts. Ordered in 1873 in 1,500 units, then increased to 1,550, they were intended for the training of cavalry regiments.
