DAGGER called Jambiya

Yemen

19th century

Steel, silver, wood, velvet

Long. total: 25.5; Long. blade: 15 cm

Short, curved steel blade, double-edged, ending in a point; median ridge.

Rocket, called saifani, in silver engraved with floral motifs, brown horn plates.

Wooden scabbard covered with chiseled silver, stars and green velvet on the reverse.

Bail rings, suspension chains.

A symbol of prestige and referring to the social status of its owner, this weapon, whose handle and scabbard are particularly carefully decorated, was also worn as a masculine accessory on the belt.
