DRUM MAJOR'S SABRE, MODEL 1822, MODIFIED UNDER THE JULY MONARCHY.
France, 19th century, dated May 1823.
Steel, brass, horn.
Long. Total: 101cm – Length. blade length: 78.8cm

Slightly curved blade, with hollow sides, with one edge and one counter-edge, with a flat back marked: Manuf Ral de Klingenthal May 1823; two control marks on the right side.
Handle of horn with copper filigree. Gilt brass crossguard, with the effaced Great Arms of France in its center; the ends of the quillons are smooth; the smooth back is stamped CP under a crown. The pommel has a short shell skirt, chased with flowers, acanthus leaves, palmettes and rosettes, its lid has a lion's head.

A gilt brass scabbard with four slits on the front, each fitted with a richly decorated gilt brass plaque. The first plaque depicts a shako with a plume and musical instruments against a foliate background; the other three feature flowers, foliage, and acanthus leaves. These plaques are framed by gilt brass reinforcement bands with a laurel leaf frieze. The upper section is flanked by two suspension hooks. The lower section, also in gilt brass, features a lion's head surmounting a ring engraved with heart-shaped motifs and positioned above a strong trefoil-shaped spearhead adorned with flowers and palmettes. The back is smooth except for the three bands and is marked "Manceaux à Paris".

Good overall condition, signs of wear consistent with use.
