PAIR OF PYROGEN
Germany
Around 1880
Bronze, silver, gold
Height: 14 cm; Diameter: 6.3 cm
(Lack)
Pair of silvered bronze pyrotechnic devices, with gilt accessories and base.
One is a monk, who could refer to Saint Anthony the Great or Saint Benedict of Mursia, whose face is covered by his hood, holding the bible in his left hand, a rosary hanging from the cord around his waist, his body tilted backwards to store matches; the base is gridded so that the matches can be struck.
The other is a nun, wearing the cornette of the Daughters of Charity, a white fabric headdress worn by the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul until the early 1960s; holding the Bible, a rosary hanging from the cord around her waist, her body tilted backwards to hold matches; the base is gridded so that the matches can be struck.
