slate coffee table by Belgian artist Jules Dewaele, pseudonym PIA MANU

Description

Coffee table, slate top, pewter bas-relief sculpture, metal base.
Unique piece by Belgian sculptor Jules Dewaele, better known as PIA MANU.
As a keen collector of fossils and trilobites, Pia Manu takes a fossil tin form which he layers on the tabletop in combination with slate mosaics.
The base of the table is made of oxidized metal, an oxidation process carried out by the artist to give the metal a unique texture and patina. Signed on the top Pia Manu.
Acquired directly from the artist in 1983 by the previous owner. Representative of the Flemish Brutalists. He models or sculpts primitive forms with materials of powerful or anti-poetic texture (as he calls them) using concrete, fossils, metals, glass, earth, and slate.
Dimensions H 30 x W 160 x D 60cm.
