BASKET called "A Traforato"
Flanders / Netherlands
First half of the 18th century
Glass
Height: 13 cm; Width: 22 cm
Openwork glass basket with double handles.
With the spread of Venetian glassmaking know-how throughout modern Europe, everyday tableware was transformed into refined creations with elaborate shapes and delicate textures.
While the base of this Flemish basket was made by blowing glass, its walls were shaped by stretching and working threads of hot glass to produce an openwork structure reminiscent of lace.
This basket was probably intended to hold a sweet dessert.
