Botany - Carnations - Caryophyllus sanguineo
Original mezzotint engraved in colors between 1738 and 1744, 40 x 24.5 cm
This botanical publication is the result of the work of Johann Weinmann or Duidelyke Vertoning. It was published in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg between 1736 and 1748 and recognized as the masterpiece of 18th century botanical edition.
The work contained more than 1000 prints in mezzotint, (one copper plate per colored ink) and for certain proofs highlights in watercolor.
"The copper plates were engraved according to the invention of Johannes Teyler, patented in 1688. They are engraved in combination with the mezzotint printed in color and finished by hand" (Landwehr 212).
The greatest artists working on botany in the 18th century participated in this collection with, among others, Georg Dionysus Ehret, of B. Seuter, JE Ridinger, JJ Haid, N. Asamin and others.
