White Carrara marble sculpture by Belgian sculptor Pol Spilliaert (1935-2023).
Title of the work “Elke Icarus wil eens vliegen” (Every Icarus wants to fly).
After a plaster cast, Spilliaert produced this first version in Carrara marble in 1968 before producing a larger, monumental version the same year.
His sculptures reflect the artist's characteristic style by combining organic and geometric forms, creating an interesting sense of tension. Pol Spilliaert studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts La Cambre in Brussels, where he was taught by figures such as modernist architect Leon Stynen, graduating in 1959.
This work is reproduced on page 56 of the book on Pol Spilliaert by Jaak Fontier, Lannoo edition.
