Totem sculpture in burnt oak by Belgian artist Jacky De Maeyer, born in 1938 in Ostend. Anthropomorphic in form, influenced by African art, the sculpture dates from 1971. Jacky De Maeyer was born in Ostend in 1938. He has his studio in his hometown and in Gordes (France). Since 1960, his work has been presented in more than 300 solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, including in the United States, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Greece, and Korea. Several monumental sculptures are exhibited in various public places. The stylized forms evoke, on the one hand, an archaic world of signs and symbols and, on the other, a common spirit with the cultures of Africa and Oceania. In his oak sculptures, Jacky De Maeyer is inspired by the organic world, stylizing it in forms that are a synthesis between organic and geometric; ovals, pyramids, spheres are constructed vertically in undulating or straight lines, either in totemic symmetry or using asymmetry that creates harmonious tension.
