MANNEQUIN or CAPIPOTE
Italy, 17th century
Walnut wood and pigments
H.: 98; H. with base: 106 cm
Realistic mannequin in carved walnut and poplar wood, representing a standing man, with an inclined face, facing upwards and whose arms are articulated at the elbows and shoulders. His hands and feet are very finely and elegantly carved, as are the features of his face which give him an expression of verisimilitude.
He wears the characteristic male underwear of the period: boxer shorts – sometimes referred to as “breeches”. The latter is sculpted with drapes and enhanced with white pigments. His lower limbs and forearms are colored pink to accentuate the realism of his skin tone, while brown is reserved for his short hair.
It rests on a base painted in red ochre.
It could be a funeral mannequin, originally dressed in cloth clothes and adorned with jewels, wandering during traditional Catholic processions.
Origins:
- Former private collection, Paris.
- Acquired by predecessor at Galerie Liova, Marc Perpitch, in 2005.
Good condition overall.
