This set of six champagne flutes, designed by Peter Behrens for Benedikt von Poschinger in 1898, brilliantly combines innovation and aesthetics. Each glass consists of a domed bowl of clear glass mounted on a long, optically blown glass stem of varying thickness. The optical pattern, achieved by the glassblower pressing the glass mass into a mold with vertical lamellae, gives these pieces a unique depth. The flowing lines, graceful curves of the glasses, and subtle use of color on the stems perfectly exemplify the Art Nouveau aesthetic. All six glasses are in perfect condition.
Known as the father of modern industrial design, architect, designer, graphic artist, and typographer Peter Behrens (1868–1940) was one of the most influential German designers of the 20th century. A founding member of the Munich Secession, he also co-founded the Deutscher Werkbund (German Craftsmen's Association), which paved the way for the Bauhaus movement. His iconic works include the AEG Turbine Factory in Berlin, the Borsig Power Station in Berlin, and the German Pavilion at the 1902 Turin World's Fair.
