Norman painted trunks or “Rouen chests” will be in the spotlight at Les couloirs du temps
These charming painted wooden boxes are known as the “Norman wedding chest”, “Rouen chest”, or “Norman trunk”.
Manufactured in Normandy in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were intended to contain the pieces of clothing and precious effects of the Norman woman (lace headdresses, neckerchiefs, jewelry and ribbons ...), and were often offered on the occasion. marriage. The smaller ones were also used as gift boxes by some traders such as jewelers.
Made of beech (sometimes in fir for the larger ones at the end of the 19th century), some still have on the back, or inside the cover, a label or an inscription painted with a manufacturer's name and an address (still located in Rouen).
Their decor comprises on a plain background (blue, green or ocher) stylized flowers, hearts, birds, but also draperies, bows of ribbons. Certain details such as colors and patterns can identify the era, and sometimes the manufacturer. If these boxes thus present typical similar characteristics, each of them is a unique piece.
