Isabelle studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon in 1940, then she attended the Beaux-Arts in Marseille from 1942 to 1945. Finally, she finished her artistic training in Montpellier, at the national ceramic school of Fontcarade. , where she learns to turn. Frédérique Bourguet studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier until 1945. She created her first workshop in Paris just after, which she shared with Valentine Schlegel until 1951. The two women ceramicists then practiced the technique of modeling.

Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet met in 1951 and decided to set up a workshop together in Vallauris in 1953. They produced models there, sometimes molded, in chamotte clay, enamelled in bright colors. In the 70s they made stoneware fired in a wood-fired oven. Some ceramists frequented their workshop, in particular the very talented Jacques Innocenti and François Raty.
