CEREAL BASKET

Tutsi culture, Rwanda or Burundi

First half of the 20th century

Polychrome basketry

H.: 21; Diam. : 10cm

Called "agaseki" or "ibeseke " , this covered basket is made of fully woven plant fibres. The lid is conical forming a handle, the body is decorated with a characteristic zigzag decoration called "umurenzi".

Very nice finesse in the braiding.

These baskets had the particularity of being made by women of the Tutsi aristocracy.
