N'KULU has been part of L'Atelier du Hangar since its creation in 1946 in Congo, in Elisabethville (now the metropolis of Lubumbashi), under the leadership of Pierre Romain-Desfossés. The Atelier very quickly became a real artistic school, and lasted until the death of its creator in 1954.
