BUDDHA HEAD

Ayutthaya Province, Thailand

End of the 17th – beginning of the 18th century

Bronze

H.: 5; L.: 3.6 cm

(old accident)

This bronze Buddha head has a particular elegance: its closed eyelids are incised as if referring to the expression of wisdom, its lips are finely drawn, its nasal bridge extends into two eyebrow arches and its earlobes are particularly elongated – this last characteristic refers to the heavy jewelry that Prince Siddharta used to wear.

Finally, his headdress is punctuated with a succession of small beads around which rose the characteristic protuberance of Buddha, called the “oushnisha”.
