CREST MASK

Culture Ekoi/ Ejagham, Nigeria

First half of the 20th century

Wood, plant fibers, skin and pigments

H.: 56.5; L.: 56 cm

Crest mask in carved wood, sheathed in skin, topped with four twisted horns, ending in a volute. The face with fine features has a half-open mouth with small teeth and hair sculpted into little buns.

The end of the neck is garnished with wickerwork made from woven plant fibers.

These masks were used during initiation ceremonies, funerals or agricultural rituals, particularly among leopard societies.

They refer to an ideal of feminine beauty. This type of characteristic hairstyle echoes that worn by young Moninkim women.
