At the origin of these three syllables articulated with care and delight by the most antique dealers of luminaries and decorators in search of splendor, Venini is a company born of an improbable association, a story worthy of a film of the Cinecittà . In 1921, a Venetian antique dealer, Giacomo Capellin, and a Milan lawyer, Paolo Venini, together founded a Cappellin Venini & C glass factory. To compensate for their lack of technical knowledge, Vittorio Zecchin's know-how and surrounded by the best craftsmen of the island, Murano, where they settled. Thanks to the outstanding artistic director Zecchin, their creations break the dominant aesthetic codes. The classical inspiration of the artist gleaned from the sober achievements of the 15th and 16th centuries, ensuring a rapid success for the firm. Known for his glass work through vases, fountains and other creations, Venini, from which Capellin separated in 1925, grasps and accompanies the turning point represented by the development of electricity and the possibilities multiplied by the democratization of the bulb . Freed from the constraint of the candle, the chandeliers emancipate themselves in extravagant and imposing forms. Very soon, the glasses used for light are no longer adaptations of existing vases but a specific production, in part, to the technical developments pointed. It was in the mid-1950s that the former lawyer, Paolo Venini, revolutionized lighting by inventing "polyhedron light", a molded glass shaped like a prism that can be assembled to infinity, mounted on a structure on which the ampoules are inserted and hidden by the glass elements. A real earthquake in Murano, this invention allows large-scale realizations for public spaces, large hotels or offices. In 1958, in the Italian pavilion, there was a gigantic chandelier of 4.60m high and 2.70m wide, consisting of 1500 pieces of glass. Champion of the monumental creations, Venini also realized in the years 1960 an impressive ceiling made of 2400 balls of glass this time, called "balloton" for the Palazzo Grassi of Venice. Giant that could be admired (and bought!) A few months ago at Serpette itself. Over the years, Venini has also combined the talents of the greatest designers, from Ettore Stossas to Gio Ponti, through Alessandra Mendini and Carlo Scarpa. Collaborations today sought in the alleys of Paul Bert Serpette!
