ECCENTRIC

Mayan culture, Guatemala

Classical period, 250 to 900 CE

Flint

H.: 26; L.: 6.5 cm

Monolith flint sculpture cut symmetrically into lateral growths forming X-shaped crosses and topped with two stylized birds accosted.

The destination of the eccentrics seems to be ritual: both an offering, a support for divination – sometimes representing the god K'awiil, or a ritual object linked to the underworld, they were kept in highly sacred secret places.
