DAGGER called “LEFT-HAND”

Toledo, Spain, 1855

Wrought iron and steel

Long. : 55; Long. blade: 43 cm

Total length: 59 cm

Single-edged steel blade, guilloche spine, counter-edged, finished in a point and decorated two-thirds of the way with an acid-etched decoration, organized in leafy scrolls and animated with avian figures. Rectangular section blade heel with thumb rest and circular openwork.

On both sides, two birds of prey carrying banners bearing the words “Arta Fa de Toledo” and “Ano de 1855”.

Iron mount, triangular guard centered with trophies of arms and military attributes, straight quillons, filigree fuse with four ribs, pommel ending in a button.

Iron scabbard with rivet button, decorated with a big game hunting scene on one side and bouquets of flowers and foliage scrolls on the other.

This dagger was used in two-handed combat and was reserved for the so-called "weak" hand, namely the left hand.
