Description
Large sculpture "Piéta" from 1999 in Belgian black marble by the Belgian sculptor Pol Spilliaert (1935-2023). His sculptures reflect the artist's signature style by combining organic and geometric forms, creating an interesting sense of tension. Pol Spilliaert studied sculpture at the La Cambre Academy of Art in Brussels where he was taught by figures such as the modernist architect Leon Stynen, of which he was a laureate in 1959. This sculpture is accompanied by a photo of Pol Spilliaert posing next to his work and a handwritten letter from the artist to the first owner of the work explaining the approach and meaning of this sculpture. This work is listed on page 78 of the book on Pol Spilliaert by Jaak Fontier, Lannoo edition.
