Description
The Sphinx made in 1886 is a monumental hollow dish (Diam 75cm) by Max Claudet (1840 - 1893). It represents the meeting between Oedipus and the Sphinx on the road to Delphi.
Claudet exhibited this monumental work at the Salon des Artistes français in 1887, in the sculpture section.
In a face-to-face as sculptural as it is hieratic, in the manner of numismatic relief portraits and in a very antique taste, Oedipus and the Sphinx face each other and engage in a battle of enigmas. The bay and the port of Thebes extend into the perspective of the composition and surround the face of the young man in blue and white.
