Cubist ceramic sculpture representing a reclining figure, possibly a mermaid.
Beautiful combination of straight lines and massive shapes, with small details like two eyes.
Made from heavy chamotte clay, unique piece.
1970s, signed by Paul De Bruyne (Belgium 1936-2007).
A graduate of the Saint-Luc Higher Institute in Ghent, he taught at the Royal Academy and the Saint-Luc Institute in Oudenaarde, as well as at the Saint-Barbara College in Ghent.
De Bruyne created a body of work in which he also considered ceramics as an element of architecture and interior design. This led him to create ceramic artworks, utensils, ornaments, sculptures, and bas-reliefs, integrated into architecture.
Almost all of his works are inspired by humanity and society of the 1960s and 1970s.
