Self-portrait in a mirror , a major work by Raymond Guidot
At the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennale, an exhibition, Who are you Raymond Guidot?, paid tribute to Raymond Guidot (1934–2021), engineer, designer, design critic and historian, teacher, and artist. On loan for this occasion, Self-portrait in the Mirror will also be presented, as part of the Fête des Puces, on Cyril Grizot's stand at Paul Bert Serpette, until October 12, 2025.
At the crossroads of figurative art, kineticism, and light art, Raymond Guidot's work, far from cold abstraction, retains a strong presence of the human figure, stylized, sometimes fragmented, always embodied. In this installation, Raymond Guidot stages a self-portrait that is both concrete and symbolic. Evoking the studio, retreat, or introspection, a simple, rustic wooden cabin shelters a white silhouette, while an optical illusion transforms the reflection of the ice into a spectral and changing presence. Guidot here subverts the codes of the mirror and the portrait to create a device for questioning, where the human figure multiplies itself in the gaze and the light.
