Very rare and large vase by Léon Arthur Tutundjian. Circa 1950
In 1929 , Tutundjian was one of the founders of the Art Concret group with Otto Gustav Carlsund , Theo van Doesburg and Jean Hélion . He later joined the Abstraction-Création group [4] .
Léon Tutundjian (1905-1968) left Constantinople around 1922. On the road to exile, first in an orphanage in Greece (where he formed a choir and an orchestra), then at the Armenian monastery of San Lazzaro in Venice , he learned the techniques of ceramics and fabric painting.
Arriving in Paris around 1923, he became friends with Ervand Kotchar , of Armenian origin, and then with the Georgian David Kakabadze , their elder. These two artists would have a considerable influence on Tutundjian, on the one hand by encouraging him to frequent the places and actors of the Parisian artistic scene, and on the other hand by transmitting to him processes (airbrushing, stamping on fabric) and forms (organic forms).
This pioneer, mastering and sublimating numerous techniques, produced a body of work of great sensitivity and diversity, the delicacy of which shines through both in the so-called abstract period and in the surrealist period.
Whether it is collages, drawings, gouaches, or oils, his work spans geometric abstraction, cosmic abstraction, biomorphic art, concrete art, automatic writing, tachism, and surrealism.
It is above all his wall sculptures, known as "reliefs", produced mainly in 1929, which remain today a major testimony to his contribution to the history of art.
An uncompromising man, with a rare inner demand, strongly influenced by great scientific discoveries, Léon Tutundjian has always been on the margins of the world and the art market, despite his role as an avant-garde artist and the recognition of his peers, including Arp , Calder , Carlsund , Hélion , Herbin , Van Doesburg .
