Description

White Carrara marble sculpture by Belgian sculptor Pol Spilliaert (1935-2023). Its title is "Elke Icarus wil eens vliegen" (Every Icarus wants to fly). After a plaster cast, Spilliaert created this first marble version in 1968, before producing a larger, monumental version the same year. His sculptures reflect the artist's characteristic style by combining organic and geometric forms, creating an interesting tension. Pol Spilliaert studied sculpture at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de La Cambre in Brussels, where he was taught by figures such as the modernist architect Léon Stynen, from which he graduated in 1959. This work is listed on page 56 of the book about Pol Spilliaert by Jaak Fontier, published by Lannoo.
