HORSE MOUTH
European work for the Eastern market
19th century
Blackened and hammered steel, partially damascened with gold and alloy rivets
H.: 54; W.: 31 cm

A piece of equestrian armor, the chamfer protects the frontal part of the horse's head. It could be adorned with a shield that referred to the identity and rank of the rider. The medallion is engraved with Arabic calligraphy mentioning Allah and other religious invocations and formulas, likely Quranic verses or protective prayers, which often accompanied Islamic military objects to promote divine protection.

The upper part of the chamfer is finely engraved with flowers and foliage scrolls, while the borders are decorated with riveted brass bands.

On custom bronze base.

Very good condition.
