CHRIST on the CROSS
Flanders, Belgium?
18th century
Boxwood
Height: 30 cm; Width: 13 cm
(old restorations)

Christ carved in boxwood with a slightly orange patina on the raised areas and brown for the deeper parts such as the hair or the folds of the loincloth. The latter is unusual in that it is not marked with a knot but hemmed around the waist of Christ.
Her finely incised hair is swept back, her head turned to her right presents a pleading look towards the sky; her short beard is divided into two strands – this new fashion of iconographic representation arose in the middle of the 16th century.
Both of his legs are bent and his feet are stacked: the left rests on the right and both were pierced by a single nail – like each of his two hands.
