A beautiful decorative lacquer panel created by Nicolas Seailles in 1978. The work comprises two panels forming a continuous composition, depicting a stylized vegetal landscape rendered in a palette of browns, patinated greens, gilding, and mineral hues, evoking a nocturnal garden. The decoration is worked in relief, with superimposed layers of tinted and incised lacquer, giving life to the floral and organic motifs that seem to emerge from the surface. In the background, a partially veiled full moon rises, structuring the composition and introducing a dreamlike dimension, characteristic of the artist's visual language.
This panel testifies to Nicolas Seailles' highly personal approach, at the crossroads of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. The deliberately irregular and patinated surface treatment lends the piece a strong depth and architectural presence, reminiscent of certain explorations of the 1910s concerning materials and total art, or even of some of Jean Dunand's lacquer panels. This work, both immersive and contemplative, is fully in keeping with the aesthetics of its time, while retaining a timelessness that makes it a unique and expressive decorative piece.
These two panels are framed in oak. Each panel is dated and signed in the bottom corner.
