Lega culture, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
Wood, plant fibers and pigments
Height: 24 cm; Length: 14 cm (excluding the beard)
This anthropomorphic mask made of single-piece wood is oval in shape. The lower two-thirds of the face are highlighted with white kaolin pigments – an area delimited by the eyebrow arches joining in a long, thin nasal ridge, forming a stylized heart.
The eyes and mouth, which are cut out, are almond-shaped, while the chin of the mask is adorned with a beard made of plant fibers.
This mask was used in the Bwani initiation rite.
