Description

A remarkable piece of solid oak woodwork, this low sideboard is in keeping with the tradition of sacristy furniture and the highly skilled craftsmanship of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Opening at the front with a wide central door surmounted by two drawers, it is distinguished by its architectural presence and sculpted decoration of great narrative and spiritual depth.

The central panel depicts a finely sculpted biblical scene, associated with the Wedding at Cana or the Last Supper, identifiable in particular by the presence of jars in the foreground evoking the transformation of water into wine. The treatment of the figures, drapery, and expressions reveals a strong influence of 17th-century France, continuing the Louis XIII taste for theatrical and expressive compositions.

On either side of the door, architecturally designed jambs house sculpted figures in niches, representing sacred figures, possibly Evangelists or saints holding the Scriptures in the form of scrolls or codices. The whole is surmounted by capitals richly decorated with mascarons and foliate motifs, in a decorative style inspired by Mannerism.

The lower part rests on a solid base punctuated with gadroons and palmettes, while the crossbar incorporates two drawers whose handles in the shape of fleur-de-lis carved in solid wood underline the symbolic and prestigious character of the piece.

The top surface displays a deep, warm patina, marked by time and use. The internal structure retains its original frame assembly and wrought-iron lock. The piece as a whole is a composite work of art, combining 17th-century carved elements with 19th-century alterations, carefully executed to restore its function as an elegant and fully functional low sideboard. The drawer interiors have been restored and lined with red felt.

Made in France or Flanders, this piece of furniture is made of solid carved oak, with softwood lining and drawer interiors lined with red felt.

With its ideal proportions for contemporary interiors, this low sideboard measuring 141 cm in length, 75 cm in height and 63 cm in depth fits perfectly into current spaces, where low pieces with a strong decorative presence are particularly sought after.
