Description

Attributed to John Lewis BROWN (1829-1890),
SKETCHBOOK
12.5 x 20 cm
(detached sheets)

Sketchbook, bound in cardboard, with worn elastic and pencil holder, containing thirty-eight sheets of which thirty-two offer drawings or annotations.

It contains ink and graphite sketches of landscapes - notably of Scotland and Egypt, these enhanced with watercolor, naval views, portraits of a man and a cat, and architectural sketches.

The LB monogram appears several times in the notebook.

The label from the Louis Latouche art supply shop where the notebook was purchased, located at 34, rue La Fayette, in Paris, would specify a date between the years 1865 and 1887.

Bibliography: Several graphite pencil sketches are known to be preserved in the Department of Graphic Arts of the Louvre Museum, Paris.
