Description

ANTHROPOMORPHIC STATUETTE depicting a Blolo Bian ANCESTRY

Culture Baoulé, Ivory Coast

First half of the 20th century

Wood with partially shiny patina

H.: 39.5; L.: 6 cm

This male ancestor statuette in monoxyl wood is the complementary ancestor of Blolo Bla – its female counterpart.

She stands with her hands placed on her abdomen marked with scarifications – a body ornament that can be seen on her back in two dotted crescent moons. Its navel is particularly prominent, its shoulder blades incised asymmetrically.

Its short, slightly bent and individualized legs rest on wide feet with incised fingers, themselves placed on a circular base decorated with horizontal incisions.

Her oval face presents a particular tranquility, her lips have a shiny patina, as do her C-shaped ears. Her forehead and temples are decorated with diamond scarifications, a body adornment which continues on her neck. Finally, his beard is ringed and streaked with arcs of a circle.
