Two-part buffet, bamboo and pitch pine, stamped "VALLETTE", circa 1890-1910, France

Galerie Vauclair - Aidjolate

Description

The ensemble demonstrates a perfect mastery of the decorative codes that dominated the years 1880-1910, a period during which furniture inspired by the Far East enjoyed considerable success among the educated bourgeoisie. The decorative vocabulary relies less on sculpted ornamentation than on the design of lines, the interplay of solid and void, and the contrast between the smooth surfaces of pitch pine and the texture of turned bamboo. This aesthetic is directly linked to the Japonisme movement, which profoundly influenced French decorative arts at the time.

The choice of pitchpin is not insignificant.
Imported from North America, this slow-growing softwood offers remarkable stability and a strong grain with amber hues that perfectly complement bamboo applications.
