Description

Map of Paris drawn and engraved under the orders of Michel Étienne Turgot, provost of the merchants. Begun in 1734, finished engraving in 1739. Raised and drawn by Louis Bretez, engraved by Claude Lucas.
Paris, second edition of the 19th century (around 1880).
1 large folio volume (66 x 51 cm).
Half red sheepskin of the time, golden title. Tired binding, rubbing, worn corners, split jaw.
Illustrated with an assembly plan and complete with 20 engraved plates mounted on tabs.

The 20 plans are in very good condition, excellent reprint on large, highly contrasted paper.
Worth a restoration of the binding or possibility of mounting the plan (see photo).
Format of the 20 assembled boards: 333 cm wide x 263 cm high with margins.


In 1734, Michel-Étienne Turgot, then head of the Parisian municipality (as merchant provost), decided to promote the image of Paris among the elites (Parisian, provincial and foreign) by having a new plan of Paris. He entrusted to Louis Bretez, member of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture and professor of perspective, the task of drawing up and drawing the plan of Paris and its suburbs.
