An Italian architect and designer of world renown, Gae Aulenti is known by everyone everywhere for her iconic 1965 Pipistrello lamp. It is she we have to thank for the transformation of the Gare d'Orsay museum and the redesigned interior spaces of the Centre Pompidou in the 1980s. A teacher in the United States, Germany, Iran, Spain, Sweden and Canada, she worked for large houses such as Knoll, Fontana Arte and Artemide and strove to democratize her creations through mass production. This earned her a place alongside other Italian greats such as Sottsass, Mendini and Branzi.
