A remarkable pair of chandeliers by Baccarat , crafted in gilt bronze and faceted crystal. The gilt bronze frame is organized around a central axis, surmounted by an elegant circular crown adorned with a frieze of ribboned reeds. The upper section, delicately flared, gradually joins the axis with a fluted section, highlighted by a fine beaded frieze at the joint.
At the center of the composition unfold four fluted and finely sculpted arms, adorned with acanthus leaves and arranged in scrolls. They support the base of the pendant, which is shaped like a hemisphere. The upper part of the gilt bronze base is delicately chased with small flowers, surrounded and separated by interlacing patterns, all set against a background of acanthus leaves.
This structure holds a multitude of garlands of Baccarat crystal beads, cut and faceted, arranged in decreasing order from top to bottom.
The whole design comes together in the lower part of the chandelier, where a frieze of concentric water leaves unfolds from the center outwards. In the center, an inverted pine cone delicately completes the composition.
The term "hot air balloon chandelier" refers to a particularly elegant chandelier design, inspired by the rounded, flared silhouette of early hot air balloons. Appearing in French decorative arts at the end of the 18th century and widely developed in the 19th century, this style is generally characterized by a basket- or hemispherical structure suspended from a central frame and richly ornamented in gilt bronze.
Its composition, often organized into concentric volumes and cascading garlands of crystal,
It creates an effect of lightness and movement, while the bronze frame ensures a detailed decorative structure. Highly prized in aristocratic interiors and grand residences, hot air balloon chandeliers are among the most sophisticated creations of the great French tradition of decorative lighting.
